Where it all began...
William S. Harley (age 21) and Arthur Davidson (age 20) draw the patterns for a single cylinder engine for use in bicycles. During 1901 they finish one engine to expriment with in bicycles.
Arthur Davidson writes his brother Walter (age 26) a letter about their engine. Walter decides to return to Milwaukee to take a ride on the new machine.
William S. Harley, Walter and Arthur Davidson build their first motorcycle that completes a road test. Meanwhile, Mr. Davidson Senior has built a 10 by 15 feet shed in the back yard of the Davidson home at 38th Street and Highland Avenue, Milwaukee.
Walter Davidson quits his job and devotes himself entirely to the motorcycle business. The shop has doubled in size to 10 by 30 feet. Three machines were built during this year.
