Frequently Asked Questions
Version 1.3 -- FAQ
Q:
The supplied Help file states that I can use Configuration | Advanced to create a scandir.ini file, but I cannot find this option?
A:
This option is no longer available in ScanDir 1.3. Refer to Installation to read how and where scandir.ini can be created.
Q:
Why are System or Hidden folders not shown in the Copy/Move Dialog?
A:
The folder tree shown in the copy/move dialog uses the settings of the folder tree in the main Scandir window. To show System and Hidden folders in the copy/move dialog, check System [V] and/or Hidden [V] in the directory Tree on the main window. *Warning* You should not modify the content of System and/or Hidden files, this can damage the Windows operating system!
Q:
Why do I get the message Path not accessible: when I click on a folder in my bookmarks?
A:
There are two possible reasons for this message:
  1. the folder does not exist anymore;
  2. access to the folder is denied;
Access to a folder can be denied if the (bookmarked) folder is a system and/or hidden folder. Check [V] System and/or [V] Hidden in the directory Tree panel to gain access to System and/or Hidden folders. *Warning* You should not modify the content of System and/or Hidden files, this can damage the Windows operating system!
Q:
I know that ScanDir is free to use but can I still donate money?
A:
ScanDir is freeware but of course you can donate money if you like it: please scroll to the bottom of this page and click the PayPal [Donate] button.
Version 1.2 -- FAQ
Q:
Why is there no entry for ScanDir under the program start menu?
A:
The entry for ScanDir in the program start menu is only created if ScanDir was installed using setup_12.exe and [V] Create Start menu was selected during installation. Sometimes, a re-boot of Windows is required before the program start entry for ScanDir becomes visible.
Q:
What does "System Error. Code: 1722. The RPC server is unavailable" mean?
A:
This error indicates that ScanDir cannot communicate with the printer spooler service. Possible causes:
  • Print Spooler service not running;
  • Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service not running;
  • Access is blocked by a firewall or anti-virus software (e.g. Comodo);
Version 1.1 -- FAQ
Q:
Why do some commands (Attrib, Delete, Rename...) not always work when running ScanDir under Windows 7?
A:
Windows 7 protects certain files against modifications by users. If you want ScanDir to make changes to these files, you must run ScanDir with elevated rights:
  • right-click the ScanDir shortcut and select Run as Administrator from the PopUp menu;
  • -or-
  • right-click the ScanDir shortcut | select Properties | click Advanced | check [V] Run as Administrator | click OK | click Apply;
Q:
When should I use the commandline option -sf or Scan to File?
A:
The commandline option -sf (or: Scan to File from the File menu) writes the scan results directly to a file, thus bypassing the item list. This option was added for the following reasons:
  • to overcome the limit of max. 32.768 item list entries on Windows 9.x platforms
  • for very large scans, writing the scan results directly to a file can increase performance considerably (up to 10 times faster).
Version 0.9 -- FAQ
Q:
Why should I migrate from windows registry to scandir.ini?
A:
Support for the windows registry will be dropped in future releases of ScanDir. This version 0.9 of ScanDir supports both .Ini fileas and the windows registry, which enables you to migrate without loosing your current settings.
Q:
Why drop support for the windows registry?
A:
I prefer to use scandir.ini instead of the windows registry because:
  1. ScanDir can be installed with Xcopy instead of a windows installer;
  2. ScanDir can be run from a memory stick (portable software);
  3. I do not like the windows registry;
Q:
How can I suppress the Splash screen?
A:
In ScanDir version 0.9 you cannot suppress the Splash screen. However, in version 0.9a you will be able to suppress the Splash screen with the startup parameter: -ns
Version 0.8
Q:
Why is the Setup_8.exe only 736 Kb, while setup.exe for ScanDir version 0.7 was over 4.3 Mb?
A:
I am using a new Installer program ( Inno Setup compiler ) for ScanDir 0.8 which generates more efficient setup code.
Q:
I would like to scan multiple directories that reside on different harddisks.
A:
The current version of ScanDisk cannot scan two different drives at the same time. However, it is possible to scan multiple drives one after another and combine the resultst in one item list. After scanning the first drive, use the [Scan+] button to scan successive drives. Scan results will then be added to the current item list.
Q:
I cannot select (virtual) drives that were recently added. The Drive selection drop-down box only shows the drives that were present before I started ScanDir.
A:
Right-click in the DIRECTORY list and select Refresh from the PopUp menu. This will refresh not only the Directory list, but it also updates the Drive list.
Version 0.7
Q:
ScanDir gives the complete path information, but I only want the filenames!
A:
Go to Configuration (Alt+C, F11 or Options | Configuration) and select the Output tab. Uncheck the box that reads "[ ] include Pathname".
Note: this option only applies to file and/or print output, the item list always displays the complete path information.
Q:
I want to make a list of directory entries ONLY.
A:
Specify file selection= *.*, Check (file) [V] Path, Uncheck (attributes) [ ] Normal, [ ] System, [ ] Hidden, [ ] Read only, [ ] Archive and [ ] Volume and Check (attributes) [V] Directory. Press [ENTER] key or click [## Mask] button.
Q:
How do I scan for a text string that contains blanks or comma's.
A:
Enter the string between quotes. An exemple: "the bat" scans for the string the bat. If the string is entered without quotes as: the bat, filenames containing the or bat will be listed.
Q:
I want to specify the date as 2099. With selections based on date, 99 defaults to 1999.
A:
If you are using a short date format the year 99 defaults to 1999. To change the date format (in Windows!) select: Start * Settings * Configuration * Regional settings and click the Date tab. Here you select a date format with a four digit year (yyyy). Next, specify 2099 as the year in the ScanDir date selection field.
